Celek and Bradley in Twitter Battle

Eagles starting TE Brent Celek appeared on ESPN on Friday to comment on DeSean Jackson’s recent comments, Kevin Kolb and the teams current status in the locker room.

Celek also took the opportunity to announce that he and LB Stewart Bradley are engaged in a Twitter battle, with Celek currently in the lead for most followers. You can get involved by going to their Twitter pages. For Celek’s page click here. For Bradley’s page click here.

McNabb Apologizes to Eagles Fans

Donovan McNabb apologized to Eagles fans on Friday for never winning the Super Bowl during a radio interview on WPEN-FM.

After both reading and hearing McNabb’s comments, it seems like an honest and genuine apology.

My thoughts: It’s a nice gesture, considering the 11 years of heartbreaking “near-greatest” he engineered in Philly, but it doesn’t do much to relieve the pain of the Eagle’s faithful who have been waiting nearly 50 years for a championship.

Eagles Flashback

The Miracle at the Meadowlands

Stacy Andrews opts for a pay cut over roster cut

Eagles guard Stacy Andrews has reportedly taken a pay cut at the request of the front office, who were unhappy with his level of production last year. His 2010 salary will be cut from $2.95M to $1.15M. When asked about the financial spanking he has just received Andrews replied, “I knew I wanted to be here. With the cut, that didn’t bother me at all. I’m happy here.”

Youth Movement: From Free Agency to Post Draft Mini-camp

There is a youth movement underway in Philadelphia. So many Eagles veterans have recently moved on. Names like Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, Kevin Curtis, Shawn Andrews, Brian Dawkins, Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown make for a large list of notable recent departures. In many ways the 2010 Eagles are going to be a much different Eagles team than we are accustomed to. The organization refuses to use the term “rebuilding”. The term does imply a certain intent to forfeit immediate success for future success by performing sweeping changes to the roster and, essentially, starting over. That was certainly not their intent as they renewed the team in phases over the period of the last few years. It seems the idea was to achieve the needed changes while remaining competitive. Sounds good, of course, if you can pull it off. The transition to leaning on a young core of offensive players did not hinder the 2009 season. Conversely, considering McNabb’s inconsistent play and the team’s defensive struggles down the stretch, it just may be that the young offensive players actually carried this team into the playoffs. The young guys -DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin and Brent Celek – accounted for 70% of the Eagles offensive production in 2009.

This year the Eagles’ front office is largely focusing on the other side of the ball, using nine of their thirteen draft picks in the 2010 draft on defensive players.  Younger veteran help has also been brought in to help the defense in the form of players like Alex Hall, Daryll Tapp and Ernie Simms. The Eagles defense will definitely have at least one new starter (replacing Sheldon Brown), and more than likely a few.

Last but not least, the uncertainty that comes with handing Kevin Kolb the keys to the car (despite however promising he seems now) cannot be overlooked. He is young, talented, hungry, and yet largely still untested. His status is… that he is the man now…for now… at least until he shows it on the field… consistently… then he’ll just be “the man”.

When the Eagles held their post draft mini-camp this weekend, the youth movement, the refreshing of the roster if you will, made for what many players and coaches described as a “new energy” or a “great energy”; both in the locker room and on the practice field. The players were not in pads and there was no hitting, so its silly to get worked up over much, if anything, from this short camp. On the other hand, it seems apparent from interviews and practice footage, that both the players and the coaches are not only on board with all the changes, but are genuinely excited about the general youth movement and about Kevin Kolb.

All of this is translating into a heap of high expectations for a very talented but very young team. Time will tell if the Eagles will be able to successfully avoid a “rebuilding” period. The Eagle possess the 9th most difficult schedule in the NFL this year. Kevin Kolb and Company are not going to have much time for on-the-job learning if they have any realistic playoff aspirations for 2010 season.

Who plays center in 2010?

With starter Jamaal Jackson injured, there is some uncertainty as to who exactly will be snapping the ball for the Eagles for the first several weeks of the 2010-11 season (at least).

Nick Cole appears to be the current favorite, but Paul Domowitch of Philly.com Sports recently commented on the possibility that it could be A.Q. Shipley.

We still think it will be Nick Cole in the middle until Jackson returns to field.

13 selections in Eagles 2010 Draft Class

When all was said and and done, the Philadelphia Eagles managed to make thirteen selections in the 2010 NFL Draft. This was an impressive feat in a seven round draft; especially considering the surprising round one decision to trade up to the thirteenth overall pick in order to select DE Brandon Graham. The Eagles draft selections were as follows:

Round 4 – 121st – Keenan Clayton – LB – Oklahoma
Round 4 – 122nd – Mike Kafka – QB – Northwestern
Round 4 -125th – Clay Harbor – TE – Missouri State
Round 5 – 134th – Ricky Sapp – DE – Clemson
Round 5 – 159th – Riley Cooper – WR – Florida
Round 6 – 200th – Charles Scott – RB – LSU
Round 7 – 220th – Jamar Chaney – LB – Mississippi State
